CPI to hold nationwide fast on Lokpal Bill
CPI National Secretary D Raja said, top party leaders and workers will take part in the fast.

Chennai: CPI on Saturday announced that the party will hold a nationwide fast next month demanding introduction of a strong Lokpal Bill in the winter session of Parliament and to protest against the rising prices and corruption.

The decision in this regard was taken at CPI's National Executive meeting in New Delhi, its National Secretary D Raja said, adding that top party leaders and workers will take part in the fast.

"The UPA government has failed to take adequate measures to curb inflation and rising prices. But at the same, it has allowed the oil companies to hike fuel prices, which badly hit the common man," he said.

Attacking the Planning Commission's cap on below poverty line families, Raja said the definition was "ridiculous and unrealistic".

"The Planning Commission members sitting in cosy rooms are cut off from ground reality. There is total disconnect with reality and people", Raja said.

An affidavit filed by the plan panel in the Supreme Court on Wednesday said only those individuals whose consumption was less than Rs 32 per day in urban areas and Rs 26 in rural areas will be treated as poor.

Raja said CPI also backed Central trade unions' November 8 'Jail Bharo' stir on corruption and price rise issues. He said CPI's 21st Congress would be held in Patna from March 27 to 31 next year, which the party visualises as a politically important one as the UPA is in "deep crisis" on various fronts and the main opposition BJP in "disarray".

"The country needs a political alternative and CPI is for unity among non-UPA, non-NDA parties," he said.

On the 2G spectrum controversy involving Home Minister P Chidambaram in the light of the Finance Ministry's note to the PMO, he said, "There is a need to question Chidambaram.

Morally speaking, his position has become untenable. His role needs to be probed and the Prime Minister should own responsibility."
