New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh says the party is ready for early elections following the withdrawal of support by the Trinamool Congress to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. Singh sounded confident that the UPA would complete its term but added that the Congress was not afraid of facing an early Lok Sabha election.
"People elect a government for five years. If the government does not complete its tenure, then we are ready for polls," he said while reacting to Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee's decision to pull out of the UPA.
He said that the reforms being undertaken by the Centre were beneficial for the country and the government should not buckle under any pressure,
"FDI decision was taken in national interest fully knowing it's political fall out I hope govt would stand firm as it did in nuclear deal," tweeted Digvijaya.
Mamata had on Tuesday pulled out of the UPA and asked her ministers to resign on Friday to protest against diesel price hike, cap on subsidised LPG cylinders, and foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.
The number game after TMC's withdrawal:
Half way mark in the Lok Sabha: 271
UPA'S strength in Lok Sabha without TMC: 254
UPA (273) - TMC(19) = 254
UPA(273) - TMC(19) + BSP(21) + RJD(4) = 279
The support of the Samajwadi Party (22) to the UPA remains uncertain.
