New Delhi: A late surge in the UP polls on Tuesday helped SP to recover some ground to occupy the second spot surpassing BJP.
This was the result of the exit polls, which also projected a hung House with Mayawati-led BSP emerging as the single largest party.
With the polling in staggered assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh ended on Tuesday, according to the exit polls, ruling Samajwadi Party has recovered some ground pushing BJP to the third spot in the last phase of the polls.
Despite vigorous campaign by Rahul Gandhi, there will be only a marginal improvement in the position of Congress, projected the surveys.
When asked whether his party was open to an alliance with BSP, Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, “Well, no I can't say this. Some workers may suggest this but ultimately decision will be taken by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and they will take the decision in favour of the Congress party”.

The SP's strong comeback, after trailing BJP in most exit polls earlier, was largely due to its impressive show in the polling for 59 assembly constituencies on Tuesday with most projections showing it on top.
According to the Star News-Nielsen Exit poll, SP may end up with 96 seats in the 402-seat assembly while main Opposition, BSP would be the single largest party with 137 seats.
It said BJP may end up with 108 with Congress way behind at 27, a marginal increase than their previous performance of 25 seats in 2002 elections.
The survey said Samajwadi Party had improved its position in the last phase, which was completed on Tuesday.
The exit poll put the vote share for BSP at 26.2 per cent and a swing of 3.2 per cent. It puts the vote share for Congress between 10.3 and 11 per cent.

The NDTV exit polls also showed that the BSP continued to maintain the lead, followed closely by the SP and the BJP.
The NDTV more cautiously pegged BSP's share at 117 to 127 seats.
NDTV gave the ruling party around 113 seats and the BJP 108-118. The NDTV has predicted 35-45 seats for the Congress.
The Times Now-Hansa Research poll estimates that BSP will finish with between 116 and 126 seats, the BJP-led alliance almost level with 114-124 and SP just a handful of seats behind with 100-110.
The CNN-IBN-Indian Express-CSDS projected BSP would end up with a seat share of 152 to 168 seats followed by SP with 99-111 seats and BJP ending at the third spot with 80-90 rpt 80-90 seats and Congress was put between 21 and 27 seats.
Another survey by India TV and C-Voter projected that the BSP would get around 124-140 seats followed closely by the SP with 106-122 seats.
The survey projected 92-108 seats for the BJP and 22-38 for the Congress.
If either of these polls proves correct, chances of a government being formed will be really slim. That's because both SP and BJP have been maintaining that they will have nothing to with each other and BJP has also asserted that it will not join hands with BSP.
SP has not actually ruled out a tie-up with BSP, but it would be a truly astonishing turn of events if such an alliance were to be formed.
The India TV-C Voter projection seems quite different with a clear first, second and third in BSP, SP and BJP.
