Srinagar: Continuing its drive to garner support in Kashmir to accomplish its 'Mission 44-plus' in the Assembly elections, a feat that will enable it to form a government in India's only Muslim-majority state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday launched a membership drive in the valley.
Chief spokesperson of the BJP in the state Khalid Jehangir said about 200 youngsters, including women, have joined the party in Kashmir, where the process of Assembly polls has already been set in motion with the issuance of notification for the first two phases of five phased polling in the state.
Senior BJP leader and former director general of police, Punjab, PS Gill, who joined the BJP at New Delhi recently said that his party's slogan to seek votes in the state is good governance, development and providing employment to unemployed youth in the state. Gill has served in Jammu and Kashmir for over 30 years in the police department.
Taking about Article 370, Gill said, "Though this is not the issue in the Assembly till now, but things will be clear when manifesto will be released." However, party sources said that the reiterating its stand on the issue, BJP has included abrogation of Article 370 in its manifesto.
When asked how the BJP will achieve 'Mission 44-plus' when the Centre has not done enough for the flood victims in Kashmir, Gill said the central government is doing everything to help flood affected people.
"People across the state are looking towards BJP with high hopes and have extent our sincere assurance that we should come up to their expectations after BJP from its government," he said.
Meanwhile, Jehangir expressed hope that his party will do well this time in Kashmir valley, where it has not won a single seat so far.
Our slogan is "Chalo chalay Modi kay saath, badlay Jammu aur Kashmir kay halath", he added.
Meanwhile, another BJP leader Dr Ali Mohammad Mir said the popularity of BJP is making leaders of other parties frustrated and they are finding it difficult to face the people. BJP candidates are getting warm reception at their public meetings, he added.
Dr Hina Bhat, daughter of former Member of Parliament (MP), Mohammad Shafi Bhat who is contesting from Amira Kadal seat, represented by her father a number of times, and other senior party leaders were also present.
