The fact that Sindhu can now contest Amritsar by-polls may put some pressure on Congress’ campaign in Punjab.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court's stay order on the conviction of former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday paves the way for Sidhu to contest the Parliament bypolls in Amritsar.

It was a seat he himself vacated after he was convicted in a murder case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 1.

The fact that he can now contest Amritsar by-polls may put some pressure on Congress’ campaign in Punjab. The Congress, however, took a guarded stand on the matter but had some strong words for the BJP.

“If the BJP thinks justice has been attained by getting the stay order, then they don’t know what justice is. Justice is what is decided by the courts of law. This is just a procedural matter till the final decision is made. SC’s decision is nothing to grieve about or be elated about. The SC judgment, of course, cannot be opposed,” said President of UP Congress, Salman Khursheed.

“As far as the Congress campaign in Amritsar is concerned, the people will choose the best candidate. If BJP wants to send out the message that they will put up a candidate who has been charged with murder, then let them,” added Khursheed.

Dismissing the importance of Sidhu's conviction being stayed, Congress Spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said, "The strategy of Congress does not depend on one person. The Congress Government stands tall on the development work done in Punjab by the state government."
