New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh on Wednesday evening apologised for his insensitive remark on a farmer committing suicide at AAP's anti-Land Bill rally in New Delhi. "I am extremely sorry for my statement. And apologise for that," he tweeted.
While addressing a press conference, Ashutosh had said that his party workers are not trained to climb trees and so they failed to save the farmer. He later defended Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, claiming that if he had gone to save the farmer there could have been a stampede.
"This was Arvind Kejriwal's mistake. He should have got down from the stage. He made a mistake. Next time I will tell Kejriwal to get down and climb the tree and save people," he added.
He had also blamed Delhi Police for the tragic incident and demanded an inquiry against it.
The farmer, identified as Gajendra Singh, climbed a tree as top AAP leaders were present at the Jantar Mantar, near Parliament, and hanged himself with a piece of cloth. Even as some people climbed up to save him, the branch gave away and he fell.
Gajendra Singh, a resident of Nangal Jhamarwada village in Dausa, also left a suicide note stating that he had three children and had been disowned by his father due to crop damage after recent rains and hailstorm.
A purported suicide note was also recovered from the spot in which Gajendra Singh mentioned that he is a farmer and his crops have been destroyed. He has also written his family's contact number.
