Prez candidate rejects allegations says, she is true to her conscience.

New Delhi: UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil on Wednesday said allegations against her were “motivated” and campaigning for the election should not "demean the dignity of the highest office".

"I shall seek the votes of the electoral college in a spirit of humility. Under no circumstances should the campaign, directly or indirectly, demean the dignity of the highest office," she said.

Patil, in a statement, if she becomes President she shall do her duty according to the Constitution and conventions established by “my illustrious and distinguished predecessors”.

Patil, who has been targeted by the Opposition NDA, said "in my over five decades of public life, I have always endeavoured to be true to my conscience. "All the allegations against me are motivated and have already been answered," she said.

"If I am elected, I shall discharge my duties and responsibilities consistent with the Constitutional scheme and conventions established by my illustrious and distinguished predecessors".

"I am now formally a candidate for the highest office of the nation," she said after her nomination papers were cleared.

The NDA asked the UPA to withdraw Patil after allegations that a cooperative bank she set up in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, collapsed because her brother and other relatives defaulted on loans worth lakhs.

A woman called Rajni Patil has accused Patil’s brother of involvement in her husband’s murder and says the Presidential candidate interfered in police investigation.
