Mallika Sagar, who was the auctioneer during the inaugural season, is all set to don the role once again in the Women’s Premier League Auction on Saturday in Mumbai.
Who is Mallika Sagar?
Mallika is an art collector from Mumbai and also a consultant to Modern and Contemporary Indian art. She is also a partner with the Art India consultant firm. She holds vast experience in conducting auctions with Pundoles (an art gallery) in Mumbai. When it comes to sport-related events, Mallika conducted the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) players’ auction in 2021.
Her career took off at Christie’s in 2001 when she became the first woman auctioneer of Indian Origin over there.

Mallika was also the first Indian individual to conduct an auction in an Indian T20 league during the 2023 season. Over the years, the likes of Richard Madley and Hugh Edmeades have been some of the familiar faces during the IPL players’ auction.
All You Need to Know About WPL Auction
After the immense success of the Women’s Premier League inaugural season, the cash-rich league is all set to take it to another level in 2024. Ahead of the WPL 2024, a total of 165 cricketers are set to go under the hammer at the player auction. Out of 165 players, 104 are Indians and 61 are overseas players (from 14 countries), of which 15 players are from associate nations.
The five franchises have retained the core teams and will look to strengthen their squads in the auction. A maximum of 30 slots are available across five different teams, with nine spots for overseas players. A total purse value of INR 17.65 crore is available to the 5 different teams at the WPL 2024 player auction to put together their desired team combination.
Each team is allowed to have 18 players in their respective squads, including six foreign players.
Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz have retained 15, 8, 13, 11 and 13 players respectively.

In terms of the purse size, Gujarat Giants have the greatest amount left with them — INR 5.95 crore — while UP Warriorz have INR 4 crore and Royal Challengers Bangalore have INR 3.35 crore. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have purses of INR 2.25 crore and INR 2.1 crore respectively.
