Sri Lanka registered a monumental victory in this ICC ODI World Cup when they toppled England in a low-scoring clash on Thursday, October 26. This is the fifth time in a row that the Island nation has triumphed over England across different editions of this global showpiece.
Sri Lanka began their winning spree during the 2007 World Cup where they got the better of England in a nailbiting encounter, securing a 2-run victory. It was in 1999 when England last time triumphed over Sri Lanka in a World Cup game at the iconic Lord’s. Overall, both teams have faced off 12 times in the history of the tournament and each emerged victorious on six occasions.

England and Sri Lanka squared off in the Super Eight round of the 2007 World Cup. Sri Lanka batted first and set a target of 236 runs, riding on some composed knocks from the top-order batters. Dilhara Fernando turned out to be the game-changer in the second innings. The Lankan pacer picked three wickets, while Lasith Malinga got two under his belt. Thanks to their lethal bowling, England were restricted to 233 runs in 50 runs.
In the subsequent edition, both teams met in the quarter-final and Sri Lanka unquestionably dominated the proceedings. Tillakratne Dilshan notched a crucial century in the match, helping his side register a 10-wicket victory to punch their tickets to the semi-final.
Sri Lanka replicated the performance during the 2011 campaign where they faced England in the tournament opener. It was another one-sided game for Sri Lanka as they comfortably chased down a 310-run target and picked up a 9-wicket win. Lahiru Thirimanne and Kumar Sangakkara deserved credit for Sri Lanka’s dominant performance. Both of them notched centuries and remained unbeaten till the end.
Despite ending their home campaign on a triumphant note, England could not overcome Sri Lanka during the last World Cup. Lasith Malinga was the standout performer for Sri Lanka. The legendary pacer ripped through the English top order while defending 233 runs. Malinga folded with a 4-wicket haul, with England bundled out for 212 runs in 47 overs.
England once again faced a batting collapse during their latest clash against Sri Lanka. Jos Buttler and Co. managed just 156 runs, losing all wickets in 33.2 overs. The Lankan batters had no trouble chasing down the paltry target, with Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama slamming half-centuries.
