Rohit Sharma smashed 131 to help India easily beat Afghanistan by 8 wickets and 15 overs to spare in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

India secured their second successive victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 World Cup, thrashing Afghanistan by 8 wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma broke multiple records as he smashed 131 off just 84 balls, with the help of 16 fours and five maximums.

Rohit became the first Indian to score seven World Cup hundreds, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. While Tendulkar recorded six centuries in as many editions of World Cups that he played — 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011, Rohit achieved the feat in only three: 2015, 2019 and 2023. Rohit also holds the record of scoring the most centuries (five) by any batter in a World Cup edition — a feat that he achieved in 2019 in England. Rohit’s ton against Afghanistan was his 31st overall, taking him past Australian legend Ricky Ponting. He is now behind India’s Virat Kohli (47) and Tendulkar (49) in the history of ODI cricket.

Rohit also broke Kapil Dev’s (72) record of the fastest ODI century for India in World Cup history, moving into triple figures off just 63 balls (12x4s, 4x6s).

Rohit also broke Chris Gayle’s record (553) for most sixes in International cricket. West Indies powerhouse Gayle had amassed a haul of 553 sixes (551 innings), which Rohit surpassed in just 473 innings.

Rohit has 295 sixes in ODIs, 77 in Tests, and 182 in T20Is. Rohit is also the third-leading six-hitter among Indians in Test cricket with 77 sixes, only behind Virender Sehwag (91) and MS Dhoni (78).

Ishan Kishan played the role of the reliable partner, scoring a run-a-ball 47, with Virat Kohli (55 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (25 not out) seeing India home in the end.

India vs Afghanistan – HIGHLIGHTS

Earlier, Rohit Sharma equalled the record for the joint-fastest batter with David Warner to 1000 runs (19 innings) in World Cups against Afghanistan.

Earlier, Afghanistan were restricted to 272/8 on a belter of a track and the sun beating down in the national capital.

Electing to bat against the two-time champions, Afghanistan were 63-3 in the 14th over before skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) combined in a 121-run stand to frustrate India.

A total in the vicinity of 300 looked well within their reach but Afghanistan lost a clutch of wickets towards the end to settle for a total, which may prove inadequate against India’s formidable batting lineup on a batting-friendly track.

Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers claiming 4-39.
