COVID Effect: BHU 'Encourages' Students to Vacate Hostel, Offline Classes Suspended
After a rise in covid positive cases in hostel and BHU hospital, varsity discontinues offline classes.

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has suspended offline classes till further notice. The varsity has preponed the Holi holidays starting from March 23 and asked students to vacate hostels. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar to review the situation of teaching-learning, in wake of rising cases of Covid-19 in the hostels and BHU Hospital.

“Cases of covid are rising every day and if the present trend continues it is likely that cases may rise even more in coming dats. Hence, in the interest of sfety of students they are encouraged to go to their homes and leave the hostels by taking their books and study materials with them,” varsity said in an official notice.

The classes will be held online and exams too can take place digitally, depending upon the situation, said the varsity. It said that the situation will be reviewed in the first week of April and further plans will be notified thereafter.

The faculty members, however, have been asked to continue their duties and hold online classes.

Meanwhile, all schools in Uttar Pradesh have been shut till March 31 amid rising coronavirus cases in the state. “All schools up to class 8 will remain closed from March 24 till March 31. All other educational institutions where exams are not underway to close from March 25 to March 31,” the government of Uttar Pradesh had announced.

Most of the universities and education institutes have been shut since mid-March 2020. The colleges have been allowed to open in a phase-wise manner amid strict COVID-precautions. As per the government guidelines, students can visit campuses only on a voluntary basis. Since last year, classes are being held virtually as one of the measures to curb covid-19.
