Madhuri Dixit, the queen of Bollywood continues to remain in the hearts of her fans despite her absence from the silver screen in recent years. Known for her exceptional acting and dance skills, the star worked in several blockbuster films. While she has collaborated with many directors in her career, her union with director Sooraj Barjatya in films like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun were iconic. Seeing her popularity, Barjatya had approached Madhuri for his third film, Hum Saath Saath Hain and offered her Tabu’s role, Sadhna. However, she turned it down due to a specific scene which involved Salman Khan.
In an earlier interview with Rediff.com, Madhuri revealed that developing a bhabhi-dewar relationship with Salman, with whom she romanced in Hum Aapke Hain Koun might not be well-received by the audience. She explained, “There is a scene in the film where Salman touches Tabu’s feet and he hugs Tabu. So there has to be this bhabhi-devar feeling between the two. But if you put me in Tabu’s place and visualize Salman touching my feet, I think people would have hooted in the theatres. I think its right, because of HAHK, which was a love story between Salman and me.”
Further, Madhuri Dixit revealed that Sooraj Barjatya was eager to cast her in the film but he was in a dilemma because he struggled to identify a role that would suit her. She believed that she couldn’t play the smaller roles of Karisma Kapoor or Sonali Bendre, especially after her leading performance in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Due to the success of their previous collaboration, Madhuri felt that her next film with Sooraj had to be a step forward and she couldn’t take a step back by accepting a role that anyone could fit into.
After a lot of discussions with Sooraj Barjatya, Madhuri Dixit had to step away from the project and the role was later played by Tabu. Her portrayal in the film received appreciation from the audience.
Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan in one of his interviews shared his experience of working on Hum Saath Saath Hain and described it as exhausting. He explained that he had to stay happy and positive throughout the film. Sooraj Barjatya encouraged him to do it his way but advised him to keep smiling, which Saif admitted was a challenge for him.
Apart from them, the blockbuster movie also featured a star-studded ensemble cast, including Mohnish Bahl, Neelam, Mahesh Thakur, Reema Lagoo and Alok Nath.
