Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Monday paid a heartfelt tribute to his late father on the latter’s birth anniversary.
“My father was always caring but never strict. He let me choose what I wanted to do in life and supported me unconditionally in my quest to achieve my dreams. I think the way he raised all his children–always giving us love and freedom–is an excellent lesson in parenting,” Tendulkar wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“His thinking was ahead of his time, and that’s one of the million reasons why I love him so much. He is why I am. Happy birthday, Baba. I miss you every day,” he added.
Tendulkar shared a picture of him along with his father Ramesh Tendulkar who breathed his last in Mumbai on 19 May 1999.
Tendulkar, on the finest batters to have played the game, has often talked about his love and respect for his father.
Just days after the passing of his father, he scored a spectacular 140* against Kenya at the 1999 World Cup and later dedicated that match-winning ton to his late father.
Tendulkar called his father his “first guru.”
“My father was my first Guru and he gave direction to my life. In his most important advice to me, he told me everything in life is temporary. The only lasting thing is the impression you leave on people’s mind. He said ‘people should remember you as a good human being even after you are through with cricket,’” Tendulkar was quoted as saying by PTI in an interview.
“He said ‘you are successful only when people around you love you and like to be with you’. I think that was his most important advice for me,” Tendulkar added.
Having become the first cricketer ever to hit 50 Test centuries, Tendulkar had also dedicated the record-breaking innings to his father.
The former India captain registered his 50th Test hundred against South Africa on 19 December 2010. Playing against the Proteas at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, the Master Blaster came up with a marvellous unbeaten knock of 111 in the second innings.
Team India, however, had to suffer a defeat by an innings and 25 runs in that Test series opener.
