When Nana Patekar Was Dropped From This 1995 Film And Replaced By Paresh Rawal
According to reports, Nana Patekar repeatedly interfered with the direction process during the shooting of Raja.

Bollywood actor Nana Patekar is known to possess a strong personality who does not shy away from speaking his mind. Having debuted with the movie Gaman in 1978, he played a wide variety of roles, ranging from hero to villain in films like Ankush, Prahaar and Khamoshi: The Musical. Agni Sakshi, Parinda, Krantiveer, Yeshwant and many more.

Nana Patekar has always been the first choice for playing sulking eccentric characters as he nailed them to perfection but he has occasionally also done comedy roles like in the Welcome films. The actor, straightforward as he was, was known to often demand changes in script to make his role stand out. Most of the time, directors agreed but there is one instance where he was dropped from a superhit film due to his constant interference in the filmmaking process.

The film was the 1995 hit Raja which starred Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Kapoor. Raja was a romantic action entertainer and had Paresh Rawal playing the mentally challenged elder brother of the protagonist played by Sanjay Kapoor. Paresh Rawal’s role was a challenging one as he had to pull off a character who was differently abled. However, according to an IMBb report, the role was initially supposed to be played by Nana Patekar. Director Indra Kumar signed the actor for the role and he even shot for three days.

According to reports, Nana Patekar repeatedly interfered with the direction during the shooting of the film. This did not bode well with Indra Kumar and after a while, due to escalating creative differences between the actor and director, Nana Patekar was removed from the film overnight. Paresh Rawal was brought in as his replacement instead. He received critical acclaim for his performance and Raja turned out to be a huge hit. Its music became very popular too.

Nana Patekar had previously worked with Madhuri Dixit in his directorial debut Prahaar: The Final Attack and would later also go on to work with her in the film Wajood.
