No major films will be released in Tamil this month due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Filmmakers and distributors are thus re-releasing older blockbusters. Thalapathy Vijay’s film Ghilli, directed by Dharani, was a much-awaited re-release after two decades. It hit the theatres on April 20. As per recent reports, Ghilli has collected around Rs 10 crore worldwide on its first day. Ghilli had collected around Rs 3 crore in worldwide advance bookings on its opening day (April 20). Thalapathy Vijay is known for breaking his own box office records. The re-release of this film has left his fans in a frenzy. They have flooded social media with videos of themselves dancing to the superhit Arjunar Villu and Appadi Podu in theatres.
Ram Muthuram Cinemas posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Genuinely #Ghilli can’t be replaced in #Thalapathy @actorvijay’s career! Records BreaKING! #GhilliInRamcinemas”. Aascar Cinemas posted that they had full houses throughout April 20. Ghilli first hit the theatres on April 17, 2004 and is celebrating its 20 year anniversary this April. The film is one of the biggest blockbusters in the career of lead pair Vijay and Trisha and its re-release has created a storm at the box office.

Interestingly, Ghilli is the remake of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu’s hit film Okkadu. The Tamil film ran for 200 days in theatres and grossed more than Rs 50 crore at the worldwide box office in 2004.
Thalapathy Vijay has now entered politics and retired from Tamil cinema. His every move is watched and applauded by fans; when he voted in the Tamil Nadu elections on April 19, he was mobbed in the voting booth. Now, with the re-release of Ghilli and its success, all eyes are on GOAT – Greatest of all time – his film with director Venkat Prabhu.
