Actress Tamannaah Bhatia appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Guwahati on Thursday. She was summoned by the ED for allegedly promoting the illegal viewing of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on a subsidiary application of the Mahadev online gaming and betting application.
Tamannah reached the ED office in Guwahati at around 1:30 PM and was accompanied by her mother. She continues to be questioned till the time of filing this report. The actress was summoned for allegedly promoting the viewing of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on the Fairplay betting app.
FairPlay is a betting exchange platform that offers a variety of sports and entertainment leisure gambling. FairPlay is a subsidiary application of the Mahadev online gaming app, which also provides platforms for illegal betting in different live games like Cricket, Poker, Badminton, Tennis, Football card games, and chance games.
For the unversed, the Mahadev betting app made headlines last year when actors Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, who have appeared in ads for the app, were summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning. The case, under simultaneous investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), had brought several other Bollywood celebrities under scrutiny following a crackdown on various betting and gaming apps by different agencies.
News18 had, on September 19, 2023, reported that 17 Bollywood stars were under the scanner in the scam. Previously, Sahil Khan was apprehended by the Mumbai cyber cell’s Special Investigating Team (SIT) in Chhattisgarh on April 28, 2024, after his plea for pre-arrest bail was rejected by the Bombay High Court. Khan, however, claimed to be just a brand promoter under a contract with M/s. Isports247, promoting The Lion Book brand, and denied direct association with the betting platform.
In October 2023, Shraddha Kapoor was summoned by the probe agency in connection with the Mahadev betting app case. The ED also summoned Ranbir Kapoor in the same month. Kapil Sharma was also summoned because he had participated in an event organised by Saurabh Chandrakar, the app’s founder. Huma Qureshi and Hina Khan were summoned to promote the app, with agencies wanting to understand their role and the amount they received as fees which, according to ED, were proceeds of crime.
