Sam Raimi On Spider-Man 4: 'Have To Figure Out Tobey Maguire's Character Journey'
Rumours suggest that Sam Raimi will return to direct the fourth instalment in the celebrated Spider-Man franchise.

In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of buzz around Spider-Man 4, potentially featuring Tobey Maguire. If reports are to be believed, Sam Raimi, who directed the first three original Spideys, will be back to direct the fourth instalment. While no formal offer has yet been made to Raimi, the director is finally addressing the rumours, further hinting about the potential story ideas for the film. In a conversation with The Wrap, the director shared that no script has been written so far, but it does have a few rough ideas in mind and will start the process if the studio “ever gives him a call.”

“I think if we were to make a fourth Spider-Man film, we’d have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire’s character would be going on and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally. And I hope that the villain would be chosen based on a representation of that obstacle,” he said on the red carpet.

Further divulging details of the possible obstacles that can come up in the film, Raimi explained, “I haven’t because I’d have to know what the next thing that character has to learn. I’d have to talk with Tobey and the writers and really figure out what his personal growth for this episode would be.”

It is pertinent to note that Sam Raimi’s iconic Spider-Man character (played by Tobey Maguire) made his return in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, while the director himself returned with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But as stated by the director, he currently has “no plans” for a future with Marvel.

Earlier this month, Raimi, while talking to CBR during WonderCon, once again spoke about the ongoing reports about Spider-Man 4.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man movies and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!”, he said.

He also shared that he hasn’t talked to Tobey (Maguire) but is on great terms with Marvel Studios and Columbia Pictures. “I’m sure I would hear about it if it were in the works. I think so. I don’t know,” he added.
