Disney has marveled us with the art of live-action and Pete's Dragon proves to be worthy mention in that category. The remake of 1977 musical, the film has all the elements of a typical Disney film, complete with a message and lot's of heartwarming scenes.
Directed by David Lowery, the film can easily be considered one of the better family films this season. Starring Oakes Fegley as Pete, the film revolves around his life as his parents die in an accident leaving him all alone in the middle of a forest at the age of five. For 5 years, Pete lives in the jungle along with his mystical friend he names Elliott. Elliott is a giant Milhaven dragon who finds lost little Pete and become his friend and caretaker in the jungle.
The plot of the story is predictable like most of the children's film are but still there is something in the story that tug at your heart’s strings. The brilliant part of the film lies in the execution of a rather child-like plot. The film has carried silences in the best way possible. You don't expect children's film to be so meditative and calm, but Pete's Dragon engages you even with no dialogues. Another gem in the film is it's background score. The serene, ear pleasing music and sound gives you an immersive experience, you keep with you even after leaving the theatre.
Disney has left no some unturned to make Elliot, the dragon the most adorable figure in the movie. The fluffy, dog like flying creature is anything but scary. He plays with Pete, listen to him, has a hard time landing after a flight, can hide and cries too. Elliot wins your heart as a perfect and adventurous companion.
The film is quiet with lot of breathing space and thus, brings a real connect with it. The film is about companionship and doesn't shy away from bringing in real people and real loss despite being a children's film. Pete's Dragon is about finding new relationship and self-less caring, a dragon amidst is just a bonus.
However, the film is not flawless. There are times when you feel the plot has been stretched too far. The entire climax looks a little unfitting to the storyline and you want to know more about Elliott after he leaves Pete under the care of Grace and Jack. But again, the film makes for a fitting summer watch, giving out a lovely message in the end.
Pete's Dragon is the type of movie, Disney makes the best. Everything in the film connects with the audience, children and adult alike. It'll make you trust your instincts and imagination more, once you leave the theatre. As the film points out, magic can be found hidden even at the most known places, and Pete's Dragon will make you believe in the magic of friendship again.
