After a prolonged wait, Netflix has officially announced the upcoming Korean drama, When Life Gives You Tangerines, starring soloist and actress IU, alongside the esteemed actor Park Bo Gum. The confirmation came on January 30 KST, marking a collaboration that has been eagerly awaited by fans. IU, known for her previous work with director Kim Won Seok in My Mister, is now stepping into a romantic role set against the serene backdrop of Jeju Island. The narrative of When Life Gives You Tangerines (working title), as per Netflix Korea, revolves around Ae Sun, dubbed as the extraordinary rebel from Jeju Island, and Gwan Sik.
Discussions surrounding the drama have been ongoing since the previous year, initially titled You Have Done Well in the Jeju dialect. The storyline delves into the life journeys of Ae and Gwan Sik, both born on Jeju Island in the 1950s.
As per the official statement from Netflix Korea, “The series’ Korean title pays homage to the Jeju dialect, translating to ‘thank you for your hard work,’ lending cultural authenticity to the narrative.”
In terms of character details, IU takes on the role of Ae Soon, a spirited individual with a heart of gold. Despite facing challenges, she remains optimistic and dreams of poetry. Her emotions are open, and she is unafraid to express her feelings.
On the other hand, Park Bo Gum portrays Gwan Shik, a dedicated and hardworking individual. While he may not easily express romantic sentiments, his love for Ae Soon knows no bounds. His silent dedication makes him a loyal and devoted partner.
The cast of When Life Gives You Tangerine boasts a formidable lineup, with direction by Kim Won Suk, the creative mind behind Misaeng (Incomplete Life), Signal, and My Mister. The screenplay is penned by the acclaimed screenwriter Im Sang Choon, known for works such as Fight My Way and When the Camellia Blooms. Noteworthy performances are also expected from Moon So Ri and Park Hae Joon.
“With heightened expectations due to its acclaimed creators and star-studded cast, When Life Gives You Tangerines is set to be a remarkable addition to the Korean original series lineup, coming exclusively to Netflix,” concluded Netflix Korea.
