The Hema Committee report has sparked considerable debate within the Indian film industry, addressing issues in Malayalam cinema. Bengali actress Ritabhari Chakraborty has claimed that similar problems exist in Bengali cinema. She has shared her own experiences that align with those highlighted in the Hema Committee report and is calling for an investigation into Bengali cinema, modelled after the Hema Committee’s findings. Ritabhari Chakraborty has stepped into Malayalam cinema with a leading role in the upcoming film Papa Buka, directed by Biju and has also worked in Hindi films. She has predominantly appeared in Bengali cinema. Now, she highlighted the prevalence of issues like casting couch and sexual assault in the Bengali film industry. She has voiced her concerns and called for action through social media.
In her post, she called out the hypocrisy of certain actors, directors and producers who thought of women as nothing more than flesh and yet were holding candle light marches for justice for the deceased in the RG Kar Medical College incident. She appealed to her fellow actresses to help ‘unmask the predators’ and acknowledged that they had a responsibility to the future generation of actresses. She also tagged the official handle of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, appealing to her to form a committee, akin to the Hema Committee of Malayalam cinema.
Earlier this month, Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra accused Malayalam director Ranjith of sexual abuse. She mentioned that predatory behaviour exists among some Bengali directors and actors, but said she had not experienced harassment in that industry. Recent updates confirm that the Kerala Police have filed an FIR against director Ranjith for sexual abuse.
Ritabhari Chakraborty has appeared in films such as Chotushkone, Once Upon a Time in Kolkata, Bawal, and Fatafati.
