Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, featuring Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, has earned a cult status that still captivates audiences. However, in a recent podcast with ANI, Nawazuddin Siddiqui revealed that he was initially perplexed and unimpressed by the film’s first cut. He admitted that it wasn’t until the film’s screening at the Cannes Film Festival that he truly appreciated its brilliance.
When asked during the podcast if he sensed the film’s potential during production, Siddiqui responded, “Not at all. You can never tell while you’re working on a film. In fact, I didn’t know even after we’d finished it. When I watched the first cut, I thought, ‘Yeh kya bana diya hai yaar (What in the world has he made)’. But when I watched the final film at Cannes, after it had been refined, that’s when I realised why Anurag is Anurag.”
He further praised Kashyap, stating, “He’s a genius man. He changed the face of Indian cinema, and the entire world took notice. He might not be appreciated in his own country, but I’m sorry, the world knows what he has done.”
‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema. Anurag Kashyap returned to Cannes in 2016 with ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’ and in 2023 with ‘Kennedy’.
Released in two parts, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012) is a gangster crime saga set in the coal mafia-dominated town of Wasseypur, Jharkhand. The film, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi, and Tigmanshu Dhulia, was praised for its raw storytelling and cinematic aesthetics, becoming a box-office success and a favorite among both the masses and critics.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is all set for his next film titled Adbhut. He has shared an intriguing poster recently and trailer is also released. Adbhut is going to be a mystery thriller. Nawazuddin was seen last in Rautu Ka Raaz which was released on the digital platform. Taking to his Instagram handle, Nawazuddin shared a look poster in which he is seen wearing a coat, with long hair, and holding a magnifying glass.
