The much-awaited movie Monkey Man was released in the US today and is receiving favourable reviews. It is indeed a special moment for Dev Patel, who made his directorial debut with the movie. The trailer had generated quite a stir ahead of the film’s release, and the box office numbers are expected to be suitably high. However, did you know that the movie was initially planned to go on an OTT release? The increased interest of actor Jordan Peele altered plans, and Monkey Man became slated to release in theatres.
In his recent conversation with The Deadline, Dev Patel stated that it was Jordan Peele who helped the film get a new direction and owes a share in its success. Dev Patel told the portal, “He (Jordan Peele) took us from this thing that was brushed under the carpet to putting us on top of the mantelpiece. He saw the film; Jordan saw me as a filmmaker, someone broken out, like what he did with his amazing comedy show and became this filmmaker. He understood the strength of using genre to talk about more interesting motif things, societal issues, using it as a trojan horse.”
According to the Deadline report, originally the film was to stream on Netflix. The platform purchased the film, but they had doubts about releasing it in the Indian market. Later, as reported, Monkey Man’s co-financier, Bron Studios, declared bankruptcy, proving to be a challenge for the film. In the end, it was Jordan Peele who supported the film.
Earlier on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Dev Patel recounted the struggles he faced during the shoot and how he injured his hand. He had stated, “Everything could have gone wrong went wrong. In the first action scene I’m basically, I’m a crash test dummy where my co-star is using my face to break every piece of porcelain in this bathroom, and my hand, I heard it snap. I was like ‘This is not good’.” Despite this, the actor continued with his filming. He revealed that over 450 people were shooting on the island and that if he stopped due to the accident, the film would not be finished.
Monkey Man follows a young man who seeks vengeance on the crooked politicians who killed his mother. In addition to Dev Patel, the film features Sharlto Copley, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vipin Sharma, and others.
