Zendaya is excited for her Euphoria character, Rue, to finally move beyond high school in the upcoming third season. The Emmy Award winner, who has portrayed Rue since the show’s debut, recently hinted at what fans can expect from the highly anticipated new season. In a recent interview, she confirmed that the next instalment will include a time jump, with the characters moving into life after high school. “It’s important because there’s only so much high school drama you can deal with,” Zendaya remarked, adding humourously, “And then she cheats on her boyfriend again!”
Though the actress and executive producer couldn’t share too many specifics about the upcoming season’s plot, she assured listeners that it’s going to be “fascinating,” during Entertainment Weekly’s The Awards podcast interview. “I don’t actually know much about what is happening. I don’t quite know exactly what the season is going to look like, but I do know that the time jump is happening,” she said.
Zendaya elaborated and said that it would be interesting to observe the characters outside of their high school environment and to see how their experiences as teenagers shape who they become as adults in a much broader world. “It will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school and how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I’ll be interested to see what happens too,” she said.
The third season of Euphoria will bring back fan favourites such as Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie and Maude Apatow, with production reportedly set to start in January 2025. However, Barbie Ferreira has announced she will not be returning and the show is mourning the loss of Angus Cloud, who passed away in July 2023 due to an accidental overdose.
Sydney Sweeney also opened up earlier this year about returning to her role as Cassie after a three-year break since the second season aired in 2022. Speaking to Cosmopolitan in August, she reflected on the time jump, “We did have a long time between season one and season two, but especially now with the time jump, it’s a new process for me. I’m kind of just learning as I go and being open for whatever’s to come. But I’m also really excited. I love Cassie. She is always such a thrilling character to play, so I’m really looking forward to what’s gonna happen in her life.”
