Alia Bhatt's Jigra Gets Relief From High Court Amidst Trademark Dispute With Rajasthan Teacher
The Rajasthan High Court has lifted the order which issued a stay on the release of Jigra. A petition was filed by a Rajasthan teacher who said that he runs an online class by the same name.

The Rajasthan High Court has intervened and has lifted the order passed by a lower court that issued a stay on the release of Alia Bhatt’s Jigra in Jodhpur. The decision came after a Commercial Court in Jaipur had put a hold on the release of the film after a petitioner had filed a trademark violation complaint. Following the decision, the movie will be released on Friday, October 11.

A bench consisting of Justices Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Munnuri Laxman stated that they are preliminarily convinced that the film’s title does not violate Bhallaram Choudhary’s trademark rights. They said, “Moreover, the appellant is not trading in the name of ‘Jigra’, rather it is M/s. Dharma Production Private Limited. Thus, the goods and services rendered by Dharma Production Private Limited by naming a movie as ‘Jigra’ cannot be said to be an infringement of trademark laws.” The court also stated that if any violation took place, they could grant monetary compensation or other appropriate remedies. They added that the petitioner should not suffer financial losses by preventing the film’s release on October 11.

Choudhary has sought a stay on the release of Jigra citing trademark violation. In his petition, he mentioned that he runs an online class with the name Jigra and he had secured a trademark for the name under The Trade Marks Act, 1999, in September 2023. This trademark falls under Class 41, which encompasses education, entertainment, and training services. Dharma argued that the petitioner was not engaged in any trade involving goods or services that would constitute a violation of the Trade Marks Act through the making of the movie.

Starring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, Jigra revolves around a sister who leaves no stone unturned in protecting her brother. The movie has been helmed by Vasan Bala and it will release in theatres on October 11.
