Tamil stars Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar have always had a friendly professional rivalry between them. Their fans often lock horns with each other on social media and there have been instances when their films have clashed at the box office as well. Just last year itself, both their films Thunivu and Varisu were released on the occasion of Sankranti. And now, it looks like both the stars are competing in the arena of re-released movies as well. Last week, Vijay’s 2004 film Ghilli was re-released in theatres and got a good response.
Not one to be left behind, Ajith Kumar is also coming to theatres on May 1 with his 2007 film Billa, on the occasion of his birthday. Ghilli has been taking the collections by storm since its re-release on April 19. It remains to be seen if the re-release of Ajith Kumar’s Billa can beat the collection of Ghilli.
Billa, a slick action adventure, is often credited with catapulting Ajith Kumar to superstardom. Billa is a remake of Rajinikanth’s 1980 film of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the Bollywood film Don starring Amitabh Bachchan.
The storyline centres on an unsuspecting individual named Velu portrayed by Ajith, who discovers that he bears an uncanny resemblance to a notorious underworld figure named David Billa also played by Ajith. Following Billa’s demise in a car accident, DSP Jayaprakash ( locates Velu and coerces him into infiltrating the criminal syndicate by assuming Billa’s identity. With the crime boss’s death kept under wraps, Velu must navigate the dangerous world of organized crime, posing as Billa and carrying out covert operations under the watchful eye of DSP Jayaprakash.
The movie was directed by Vishnuvardhan. Billa hit theatres on December 14, 2007, receiving acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Its success paved the way for a prequel, which narrated the origin story of the gangster named Billa. Meanwhile, Ajith is currently awaiting the release of Magizh Thirumeni’s Vidaa Muyarchi.
