The 47th Kerala Film Critics Awards 2023 was recently announced on Sunday. The Malayalam suspense chamber drama film Aattam has been chosen as the Best Film in the 47th Kerala Film Critics Awards. The film’s director, Anand Ekarshi, was adjudged to be the Best Director.
Biju Menon and Vijayaraghavan shared the Best Actor (Male) Award for their roles in Garudan and Pookkaalam respectively. Zarin Shihab and Shivada received Best Actor (female) awards for their roles in Aattam and Jawanum Mullappoovum respectively.
Earlier, Aattam also won the 2023 Grand Jury Award at the Indian Film Festival in Los Angeles. It was also chosen as the opening feature film at the 54th International Film Festival of India, held in Goa. The movie was produced by Dr Ajith Joy under the banner of Joy Movie Productions. It is loosely based on 12 Angry Men.
Thadavu, directed by Fazil Razack, has been listed as the Second-Best Film. Razack also received the award for the Second-Best Director. Thadavu revolves around Geetha, a solitary play school teacher who grapples with a dire existence. Diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, she plots a crime to access medical aid available to jail inmates.
Kalabhavan Shajohn (Ithuvare, Aattam), Shane Nigam (RDX, Vela), and KPAC Leela (Pookkaalam, Poovu) received supporting actor awards. V.C. Abhilash received the Best Screenplay award for Pan Indian Story.
RDX (Director Nahas Hidayath) and Garudan (Director Arun Varma) shared the award for Best Popular Film.
The awards were finalised by a jury headed by association president George Onakkur along with Thekkinkad Joseph, Aravindan Vallachira, Murali Kottaikkakam, and A. Chandrasekhar.
Sreenivasan, an actor, scenarist and director, received the Chalachitra Retnam Lifetime Achievement Award. Actors Mukesh, Premkumar, and Suhasini, as well as film editor Bina Paul and producer Kireedom Unni were selected for the Chalachitra Prathibha Awards.
Kurinji (directed by Gireesh Kunnummel) won the award for Best Tribal Language Film. Armo got the Best Cinematography award for Anchakkallakokkan, while Appu Bhattathiri won the Best Film Editor award for Rani: The Real Story.
