KOLLAM: Youth Congress state president P C Vishnunath MLA and vice-president M Liju questioned the veracity behind the reports that the operations at the Chavara unit of the Indian Rare Earths (IRE) would be suspended due to non-availability of raw materials.  Addressing a press meet here on Friday, the YC leaders said:As far as we know, there is enough raw sand at Vellanathuruthu area to carry on the operations of the IRE”.  “The reported move to close down the Chavara unit of the IRE should be suspected as a bid to sabotage the allegations levelled against the management and the CBI inquiry into it,” Vishnunath said.  Referring to the appointment of 121 workers at the unit just 10 days ago, he said that the IRE management should explain why they made these appointments if they had any plans to lay off workers. Vishnunath said that the Youth Congress state committee had been providing support to the activists of the Chavara unit of the youth wing, who were on the forefront in bringing to light the charges levelled against the IRE.He said that the Youth Congress had decided to react fiercely against the move to suspend operations and a people’s convention would be held at Chavara on Sunday, in this regard. Senior Congress leader V M Sudheeran will inaugurate the convention. Youth Congress to picket theatresThe Youth Congress state committee said that the activists would picket the theatres in the state which had taken the decision not to screen any new Malayalam films. “At a time when all is said about compulsory Malayalam education at all levels, classical language status for Malayalam and so on, it is a sad fact that the theatres in Kerala are not screening Malayalam films,” Vishnunath said.
