Worst rain in 100 years forces 'The Hindu' to cancel print edition in Chennai
Rain or shine, people of Madras or now called Chennai never missed their daily dose of 'The Hindu' with the morning filter coffee.

Chennai: It is unprecedented. 'The Hindu', known as the “Maha Vishnu of Mount Road”, has cancelled its Chennai print edition on Wednesday. Perhaps for the first time in its 137 years history, 'The Hindu', founded in 1878, cancelled its edition in Chennai, its headquarters and the largest market.

Rain or shine, people of Madras or now called Chennai never missed their daily dose of 'The Hindu' with the morning filter coffee. The rain battered people of Chennai got no copy of today's 'The Hindu'.

The English daily has also cancelled its print editions in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, Vellore in north Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry due to unprecedented rain.

In an announcement posted on its website, 'The Hindu' says, “Consequent to the heavy rain, print editions of The Hindu dated December 2, 2015, in Chennai, Vellore, Puducherry and Tirupati have been cancelled after taking into consideration the safety of those in the distribution network. However, the Chennai edition has been uploaded online in PDF format for the benefit of our readers”.

In another first, Chennai airport has shut its operations due to heavy rain. The rain water has entered the airport inundating the tarmac. The tarmac is under knee deep water and the entire airport is flooded. Thousands of passengers have been stuck at the airport.

Some of Chennai's best known restaurants have also downed their shutters due to rain. These restaurants never closed their doors in the past.

Most bus stations and Railway stations have also been shut due to flood. Water has entered almost every establishment across Chennai, home to almost one crore people.
