BANGALORE: There are people who think about others, sometimes even before themselves. A couple from Bangalore thought about serving others even after their death. The couple Rajendra Kumar Golechha and his wife Sundar Devi Golechha, are remembered for their act of kindness. Rajendra Golechha, a resident of Gandhi Bazaar, suffered from diabetics and hypertension. He died on September 15, 2011 at the age of 59 years at St John’s Medical College and Hospital. As per his wish, his eyes were donated to the Lion’s Eye Hospital and his body was donated to the anatomy department to train medical students. He even left a will stating this wish. His widow was admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya on October 1 for a heart surgery and died there 52 days later on November 22. She too shared the her husband’s belief and followed his example: She donated her eyes to Narayana Netralaya and body to M S Ramaiah Medical College for research. This Jain couple’s decision is unusual for while the community believes in serving humanity, the body is believed to be sacred. However, the couple believed in serving humanity and wanted to set example. As requested by the couple, only prayers were allowed and no funeral was conducted to pay the last respects by family and relatives.Commending this couple’s decision, chairman of medical advisory board and medical director at Manipal Hospital, Dr Sudarshan says, “To be honest the trend of organ donation in our city is very pessimistic. There are a lot of people who are still unaware about organ donation. People must be more educated with this subject, because when a person is declared as brain dead he can still save someone’s life, before his life ends.”He however adds, “I understand that it hurts to watch your close ones on the death bed. However he has something that is fully functional which he will not be using any more; but for someone else it is the precious gift of life.”
