The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Blueline menace.

New Delhi: Why shouldn't Blueline buses be taken off Delhi roads? That's the question the Delhi High Court has asked the state government to reply to, in light of the recent spate of deadly accidents.

The court, on Tuesday, has taken suo motu cognizance of the Blueline menace and asked the Delhi Police for information on number of Blueline bus owners, who have been taken to task for violating traffic safeguards laid out by the Supreme Court.

The court also wants to know how many buses have been fitted with the speed governors and wants a mechanism in place for checking traffic violations.

The next hearing in the case is on scheduled for July 31. The Delhi High Court's action comes amidst an increasing number of accidents involving Blueline buses in Delhi.

On Sunday, a 14-year-old boy had been killed in an accident with a Blueline bus in Vikaspuri.

This accident came just a day after one person was killed and two injured in another accident in Nagloi.

On July 1 too, a speeding Blueline rammed into several vehicles at a traffic intersection killing a boy and injuring seven others

Similar accidents in Tilak Nagar and ITO had claimed two lives on June 4 and May 9.

There are over 3,000 private blue line buses operating in the Capital and many have been found violating traffic rules.

These accidents had forced Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to announce that Blueline buses will be phased out soon. The Delhi government has already cancelled 600 Blueline licenses.
