In Pune’s Khadakwasla circle, the four dams collectively added 1.5 TMC water in 24 hours. It is enough to meet the requirement of the city for a month while the state irrigation department issued an alert about the possible discharge of water from the Khadakwasla reservoir into the Mutha after its sock surged to 89 per cent.
The department has urged the residents to stay away from the riverbed and move to safer places. Several times, the irrigation department has issued alerts when the water crosses the threshold TMC at dams. In such a situation, many people wonder about the significance of TMC and what it stands for.
TMC means one thousand million cubic feet. That is, one thousand feet long, one thousand feet wide, one thousand feet high quantity of water. In other words, it can also be said if one foot of water stagnates in an area of approximately 2300 acres, it is equal to 1 TMC. The full form of TMC is a thousand million cubic feet. It is also denoted as TMC or Tmc ft or Tmcft. It is a unit used to measure the volume of water in dams or reservoirs in India.
One TMC is approximately equal to 2,831 crore litres of water or cubic feet. A quantity called TMC is generally used to measure the capacity of large reservoirs. For example, the storage capacity of India’s largest reservoir, Indira Sagar in Khandwa district, is around 430.8 TMC.
Alternatively, 35.32 TMC is equal to one cubic Kilometer (km3) is the standard unit used by the Central Water Commission of the Government of India for reporting gross and effective storage capacities of dams in India in the National Register of Large Dams (NRLD). In agriculture, a rough estimate by irrigation experts is that 1 TMC water is needed each year to irrigate 10,000 acres.
