New Delhi: The grief at Suresh Patel’s house in Valsad town of South Gujarat is palpable. Suresh's mother Laxmiben Patel was one of the seven who was killed in the Amarnath Yatra terror attack.
"We last spoke to my mother about five days ago. After the attack we spoke to the tour operator and he told us that he was injured, then he disconnected the call. We got to know that my mother is no more through news channels and WhatsApp. Neither the police nor the administration had any idea,” said Suresh.
Of the seven who were killed in the terror attack, three were from Valsad district, two from Dahanu and Palghar in Maharashtra and one from the Union Territory of Daman and Diu.
"The bodies of the Yatris will reach Surat and Daman airport. We have coordinated with the state control room and have parked ambulances at both places. Our officials are in touch with family members of the victims," said Valsad Collector C R Kharsan told News18.
A special Indian Air Force aircraft carrying the bodies of the Amaranth Yatris along with those who have been injured, arrived at the Surat airport around 1 pm. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani and others will paid their respects to the deceased and met the injured.
The state government has announced a compensation of five lakh to the next of kin of those who died and Rs two lakh for the injured.
