PATHANAMTHITTA: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has put the party leadership in the dock for its failure to cash in on the favourable political situation in the last Assembly elections. Inaugurating the delegate session of the CPM district conference here on Monday, Achuthanandan said that the issues such as Kozhikode ice cream parlour case, palmolein case and jailing of R Balakrishna Pillai gave an upper hand for the LDF in the electioneering, the UDF could be able to confront them with the P Sasi issue. The Opposition leader said that the people without clean character and conduct in the party should be shown the door. The trend of easy availability of party membership should not be tolerated in the larger and long-term interests of the party, Achuthanandan said. The veteran CPM leader called for intensified fight against the liberalisation measures of the State and Central Governments. Achuthanandan lambasted the UDF Government for taking credit for the attractive welfare pension benefits sanctioned by the previous LDF Government. The CPM leader said that the UPA Government headed by Manmohan Singh during its second term initiated measures for the corporate giants and upper income group people. The plight of the common people worsened under the second term of the UPA Government, which scrapped the administered prices mechanism on the petroleum products thereby giving autonomy to the petroleum companies such as Reliance and Essar to fix prices. CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Thomas Isaac, P K Gurudasan, M A Baby, Vaikom Viswan, M C Josephine, K Anandagopan, R Unnikrsihna Pillai, K C Rajagopalan, T K G Nair, Raju Abraham, A Lopez, A Padmakumar, R Sanalkumar, K P Chandrasekhara Kurup, K P Udayabhanu and V K Purushothaman Pillai were present.
