KOCHI: What appeared to be a truce between Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan and CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan till the Neyyatinkara bypoll, was nothing but the lull before the storm. By sending the reported letter to CPM general secretary Prakash Karat asking for a leadership change, Achuthanandan has let out a war cry, and made it clear that he wants the party to learn from the current fiasco. In a calculated move, putting both the state and central leadership in a spot, the veteran leader has made his intentions clear, opined political observer and Left thinker Sebastian Paul. “As far as the LDF is concerned, VS is doing for Neyyatinkara bypoll what R Selvaraj did during the Piravom byelection. Though they are beyond any sort of comparison, VS has put himself on par with Selvaraj. Being a venerable leader, he shouldn’t have taken such an extreme step while the pre-poll campaign is on,” said Paul. He added that the decision to send the reported letter was a deliberate move and not a spur-of-the-moment one. “The reference to 1964 and S A Danke are clear indications that VS thought about the move and decided to go forward at the right moment. As far as the CPM is concerned, it’s a big blow. Being a senior leader, VS should have waited till the poll date (June 2). At this point, any follow-up action would affect the party. If VS decides to leave, that too will have its own implications,” he pointed out.CPM state committee member and CITU state president K N Raveendranath said if there is such an issue it should be discussed by the higher bodies. “I don’t know whether such issues exist. If it does, it should be discussed at the level of higher bodies like the Politburo,” he said.
