New Delhi: BJP on Thursday termed the Congress decision to issue a comprehensive legal notice to the UN and the Volcker Committee ?bizarre?.
They accused the ruling party of wanting to embarrass the country in order to ?defend personal and partisan interests?.
"This is a bizarre move. It is astonishing that to defend the personal interests of an individual and the political interests of a party, Congress and UPA want to put the entire nation in an embarrassing situation", BJP General Secretary and Spokesman Arun Jaitley said.
"India aspires to be a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and cannot be expected to litigate against an international institution in its own domestic and municipal courts", he added.
BJP says impound Natwar?s passport
The BJP also demanded that the government impound the passports of Foreign Minister Natwar Singh and others suspected to be recipients of kickbacks from the Iraqi Oil for Food scam.
BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbbas Naqvi said that the Centre should immediately register cases against all Indian nationals figuring in the scam.
"We hope there will be no repetition of the Bofors episode," he said.
Describing the involvement of Mr Natwar Singh and other people in the scandal as a 'national shame', Mr Naqvi said BJP President L K Advani was convening a meeting of General Secretaries of the party to take stock of the situation and chart out the future course of action.
