New Delhi: A Mexican issue of the Playboy magazine showing the cover of a model allegedly posing like the Virgin Mary has caused outrage among some Catholics.
December is the month in which (m) millions of Mexican Catholics celebrate the festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which showcases a rich variety of Virgin Mary images.
However the cover of Playboy magazine may have been the last place Catholics would have expected to see a picture they many say depicts the Virgin Mary.
The Mexican edition of the gentleman's magazine features a nude woman with a white sheet draped over her head and body standing next to a prop that resembles a stained glass window.
In the picture, Playboy model Maria Florencia Onori poses as a representation of the Virgin. The December issue of the magazine was released a day before the traditional Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness of Mexico.
Headline reads in Spanish "We adore you, Mary"
The pose and facial expression evoke the docile and innocent image of the Virgin Mary seen in many paintings and statues.
