In an attempt at food policing, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has banned the sale of meat in the city for the next 16 days owing to the occasion of the Krishna river festival.

The corporation's decision has drawn flak from traders and residents who are livid at the attempt to curb the freedom to eat.

"There are people from various religions living here and the government must not tell us what to eat," a resident said.

The corporation said the notice has been rolled out in "ínterest of public health" and has also threatened strict action against offenders.

"Many traders will suffer because of this decision. Sitting idle for 15 days is very difficult," a meat trader said.

In 2015, Mumbai saw a similar ban on meat sale for a Jain festival.
