Around one lakh people will be rendered homeless on Monday as the controversial Ulhasnagar demolition drive resumes.

Mumbai: Thousands of people will watch their homes getting bulldozed as the controversial Ulhasnagar demolition drive resumes on Monday morning.

The drive is likely to render over one lakh people homeless in this satellite township of Mumbai.

Rejecting the plea of local residents asking for a stay, the court came down heavily on the authorities for not implementing the earlier order.

The state government had sought time to amend development control (DC) rules to protect some buildings which have come under the hammer because of the November 23 order of the High Court which directed demolition of 855 illegal structures identified by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation.

But the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation received the green signal on Friday from the court to resume the demolition drive.

The first round of the drive had received severe opposition and had to be stopped in the face of strong protests by local residents, some of whom even attempted suicides to prevent officials from carrying out the court order.

The area had witnessed arson and violence and this time round Ulhasanagar Municipal Corporation is not taking any chances and has tightened the security to bring down 855 illegal buildings.
