Ugadi or Yugadi is grandly celebrated as the first day of the year by the people of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Ugadi, also known as Telugu New Year, is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra. It is an important day in most Hindu calendars that are based on lunisolar calendars, and it is also known as Vikram Samvat and Bhartiya Nava Varsha.
Luni-Solar calendars divide the year into months and days based on the Moon and Sun’s positions. The Solar calendar, in contrast to the Luni-Solar calendar, divides the year into months and days based solely on the location of the Sun. As a result, the Hindu New Year is celebrated twice a year, under various names and at different dates.

Ugadi 2024: Rituals
Ugadi is a popular South Indian festival. It represents wealth, development, new beginnings, and the triumph of good over evil.
- The day starts with a traditional oil bath, followed by prayers. Scriptures recommend that one can take an oil bath and eat neem leaves.
- In some places, devotees make a paste by combining neem leaves, jaggery, coriander seeds, and tamarind.
- It is thought that this mixture purifies the blood and boosts immunity.
- Moreover, some people take an oil bath on Ugadi because they think the oil contains Goddess Lakshmi and the water contains Goddess Ganga.
North Indians do not celebrate Ugadi, but instead begin the nine-day Chaitra Navratri Puja on the same day and consume Neem with Mishri on the first day of Navratri. Similarly, in Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa is celebrated.
Ugadi 2024: Significance Of Telugu New Year
Ugadi marks the first day of the lunisolar calendar. Surya Siddhanta is an ancient text that serves as the foundation for the majority of Hindu calendars. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Surya personally revealed the Surya Siddhanta treatise to mankind. As a result, tracing Ugadi’s origins may be impossible.
According to Vedic astrology, the day of Ugadi is important. Ugadi falls under the Sade Teen Muhurat.
In Vedic Astrology, Ugadi, Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami, and half of Bali Pratipada form the Sade Teen Muhurta, which is no longer required. It is thought that all work done on these days produces beneficial outcomes.
