Mumbai: Every one has been wondering where all the bahus of Indian television have gone.
The golden years of daily soaps are history now and the bahus too are moving on. Some are experimenting with their roles and some preparing for motherhood.
Politician, producer and actor Smriti Irani, TVs best known bahu, has had a huge makeover and is now trying her hand at comedy in her new serial Maniben.com, a far cry from the Tusli we know.
"I think it is more about wanting to experiment with your image. Doing an anchor bit is a safer option," says Smriti.
Sakshi Tanwar aka Parvati of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki tried making the big leap onto the big screen but her film Coffee House opposite Ashutosh Rana sank without a trace after which the actress has avoided the shutterbugs
Shweta Tiwari's rocky marriage to Raja Choudhry often kept her in the news. Her other claim to fame was playing Prerna in Kasautii Zindagi Ki. Shweta then got onto the reality TV bandwagon and now she is is doing a Nepalese film.
Others too, who spent years shedding tears are exploring new options.
"I was really tired, really fed up of saas-bahu. So I quit mid way. In fact both my shows were doing really well when I quit the saas-bahu shows. I wouldn't have continued doing them," says actor Shweta Keshwani.
"Recession happened and then the prices had to be cut, new faces, longer working hours... everything just changed which in a way is very good," actor Sai Shakti says.
Even TV vamps are taking a break from kitchen politics. Kamya Panjabi who played the wicked Sindura in Zee TV's Dulhan is busy preparing for motherhood.
"I have worked; I have slogged so much for the past few years that I don't like working now. I just like to enjoy these days of my pregnancy and be with my husband and my family all the time," she says.
