Five militants were neutralised and three security personnel were left injured on Friday during two separate encounters that are underway in Jammu and Kashmir.
As the daylight broke, the security forces began an operation in Nowbugh Tral area of Awantipora, killing two militants, so far. The police said that a hideout of militants has also been demolished and there have been no casualties in Tral. The operation is going on.
Meanwhile, an operation that was halted in Shopian on Thursday night resumed on Friday. On Thursday evening, three militants were killed and two security force personnel were injured in an encounter with militants in South Kashmir’s Shopian town, police said. A joint team of police, army and CRPF personnel launched a cordon-and-search operation in the locality following information about the presence of militants there.
After two militants managed to get into a mosque on Thursday as the encounter was on, the forces sent the brother of a militant, a local Imam and the head cleric of the masjid to persuade them to lay their arms and surrender.
However, the militants refused. On Friday morning, the area went into a tizzy.
As of now, the encounter has been underway for over 15 hours. Meanwhile, two of the three soldiers injured have been shifted to the Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar.
Of late, Shopian has seen multiple encounter operations in the last two months. Sources in the police say that either all or few militants belong to the Ansar Gazwatul Hind group, an organisation that was once headed by Zakir Moosa, who was killed in an encounter with security forces in 2019.
Moosa was once a close aide of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, but founded the AGH after a fallout.
