Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Traders Association has called for a statewide bandh against India's participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) on Tuesday. All shops are likely to remain closed as per the bandh call.
The head of the association says there are around 4,500 small and large traders associations in Tamil Nadu that have expressed support. Some calls for rail roko and rasta roko have also been made. Their contention is that even though the Prime Minister has not gone to Sri Lanka, someone from India is going and that there should be no representation at all from India to CHOGM to be held in Colombo.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh decided not to go after all political parties from Tamil Nadu including the Congress opposed his participation citing Sri Lanka's alleged war crimes. Foreign Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is representing India in the CHOGM.
