ERODE: All the 1,330 verses of Tirukkural and its meanings have been incorporated in the free laptops given to the students of the government and government aided schools.“It is a great boon for us as the Kural contains moral values that one should uphold in life,” Prabavathi, a student of the Savakattupalayam Government Higher Secondary School near Gobi, told Express. Inclusion of Plus One and Plus Two textbooks in full is also an added advantage, she said.A total of 55 students in Savakattupalayam got laptops costing `10,000 each. Located near Gobi, the village is home to weavers and farmers. The Savakattupalayam government school has over 570 students and 23 teachers. The school had recorded a pass percentage of 97 in last year’s public examination. As Srimathi, another student, puts it: “Poverty is not a hindrance  to study well. But opportunity is a must.” “Now, the government is creating that by giving us free uniforms, food, bicycles, textbooks, footwear, laptops and educational aid.” “We can never even dream of buying a laptop. Our parents are not in a position to help us pursue Plus One course itself. But we have managed to join the course after some difficulties. Now, the free laptops motivate us to pursue college studies,” Kanimozhi, a student, added.“In the district, 19,756 school and college students will get the laptops this year,” the officials said. “The laptops contain glossary of science words and also have a dictionary. Even if we join for engineering course, it would be useful in our project works. Also, from now on, parents will be more keen on sending their wards to government schools so that they could get these kind of assistance, including `5,000 for studying in Standard X, XI, XII,” Indira Priyadashini said. The laptops have 2GB RAM, 160GB hard disk, Intel Pentium dual core processor, web camera, USB standard port, Windows 7/Linuz software, 128 DRAM for graphics, keyboard with integrated mouse, battery with five hour back-up, charger, DVD writer/reader, peripherals for internet connection, pre-loaded anti-virus, pouch for the kit and OpenOffice.org 3.3 with one-year warranty.
