New Delhi: At a glance, there was nothing remarkable about a thin, tall, bearded young man, who's dressed in a burqa and trying to hit on women in a bus. After getting slapped a bunch of times, he is thrown out of the bus. But only then do we get to see his superpower -- DANCE.
The 1994 cult film 'Kadhalan', later dubbed in Hindi as 'Humse Hai Muqabala' and in Telugu as 'Premikudu' was a path-breaker in many ways -- music and choreography being one of the most important ones. Choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director Prabhudheva showed off his slick moves that took the entire country by storm.
Be it the transparent bus and slick dance moves in the song 'Urvashi, Urvashi', or the luscious sand dunes in 'Gopala Gopala', or the 'invisible man' dance routine in 'Muqabala Muqabala', every song had enough new concepts to keep the audience, especially the younger bunch, riveted.
Those who unfortunate enough not to understand the original Tamil lyrics, had the pleasure of decoding brilliant, if slightly irrelevant lyrics of the wildly popular songs.
Sample this: "Jaanti ho hindi mein pyaar ke kitne akshar/ Bol do meri khatir, pyaar ke do hi akshar" or "Urvashi Urvashi take it easy Urvashi/ Ungli jaisi dubli ko, nahin chahiye pharmacy/ Jeet ka mantra hai, take it easy policy"
We are sure that the lyrics make perfect poetic sense in Tamil, but they sound hilarious (but totally hummable) in Hindi. But still, they were not as bizarre as the song 'Telephone dhunn mein hasne waali'.
If there was any more proof needed for the greatness of this album, recently, the chartbuster 'Urvashi Urvashi' also inspired American singer-songwriter Will.i.am's new song 'Birthday'.
The song, which has over 34 million views on YouTube, was co-produced by Will.i.am and Damien LeRoy. It was co-written with Rahman and up-and-coming R&B artiste Cody Wise, along with US producer Keith Harris.
But we didn't need any proof of this soundtrack's greatness, anyway. This is AR Rahman's best work, and we have never loved Prabhudheva more.
