The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council(KCBC) has urged the members of the Catholic community to clean up the public roads in front of their homes and offices.
The call was made by the council in a circular on waste management.
“Waste management has turned out to be a burning issue both in the rural and urban regions. Waste disposal is not the responsibility of local bodies alone.
No one can keep off from the responsibility,” the circular stated.
The circular was jointly issued by KCBC president Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, vice-president Archbishop Francis Kallarakkal and secretary-general Archbishop Thomas Mar Kurilos. It was suggested that committees may be constituted at the parish and school levels to monitor waste management. “Those who dump waste should be brought to book.
Parishes, church-run hospitals and schools, convents, monasteries and other church organisations should take an interest in this regard and should be a model for the society,” the circular stated. The bishops have added that the dumping of waste into water bodies should be considered as a social evil. It was also advised in the circular that the Catholic community should not leave their land idle.
In the recently released environment policy, the KCBC had stated that dumping waste in public places is a sin that should be confessed. Environment protection ought to be part of the religious belief, the policy had stated.
