Wind has been utilised as a source of power generator with the help of windmills for centuries. As per Local18 reports, Tamil Nadu has been the second largest producer of wind power in India. The district of Kanyakumari is credited with generating wind power for the last forty years. The Local18 reports that the largest wind farms in India are located in Aralvaimozhi, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. It is called Muppandal wind farm. According to more information, the Aralvaimozhi tripartite is the second windiest place in the world. Before 1980, the area was mainly used for the cultivation of groundnuts. By the early 80s, turbines were installed at the place to generate electricity. So, as the years passed by, the place experienced a decline in cultivation and was transformed into a full fledged windmill farm. More information states that by early 2000s, the place was installed with around 10,000 windmills for electricity.
Employees of a private windmill company, Karthik and Paramasivan, talked to Local18, detailing the windmill farms in the state. They shared, “The wind mills operating in Aralvaimozhi in Kanyakumari district are the largest wind farms in Tamil Nadu.” Speaking further, they added, “These windmills generate 1600 MW of electricity. In this narrow area alone, 3,000 windmills have been installed.”
The Aralvaimozhi pass is known to naturally generate electricity using the wind power. According to more information given, the area accounts for 23 percent of power generation in Tamil Nadu. One of the best qualities of the plant is that it works without causing any damage to the environment. The mills generate around 50 MW to 200 MW of electricity in the area. The period between May to September generates the most electricity, due to high winds.
