Many times people follow their passion and do social work for free. In a similar vein, a retired police officer is continuing to teach martial arts to students for free. The man named Gnanasekaran hails from Puducherry. With a career spanning over four decades, he has been teaching martial arts, including karate, to youngsters since 1980.
His karate skills earned him a spot in the police force in 1986. During his tenure, he not only served the force but also continued to teach karate for free in government schools, colleges and slum areas for about 44 years.
Over a hundred students who have studied martial arts under him have participated in various competitions at the national level and have won awards, certificates and cash prizes. More than eight students have participated and won in various competitions, including karate, held at the world level.
Gnanasekaran, who retired from the police a week ago, continues to teach martial arts to students for free. He remains committed to his mission of empowering youth through martial arts. He can be found training students in government schools and colleges as well as slum areas on Saturdays and Sundays.
And while working in the police, the then IG Shivaji was the crutch for him and helped him in various ways to develop the art. Shivaji recognised his talent and encouraged him. After that, Gnanasekaran continues to provide this art to students who aspire to take training in the field.
It is worth noting that Gnanasekaran has been training 2,000 to 3,000 karate players every year without giving up his karate work even after his retirement. His story serves as an admirable example of dedication, perseverance, and community service. His unwavering commitment is a testament to the positive impact that an individual can have on society.
