An attempt to marry off a minor girl to a 21-year-old youth was stopped in Kodavasal in Tiruvarur district on Wednesday following the intervention of officials.
Sources said the parents of the 14-year-old girl, a resident of in Vadakkarai village, were attempting to marry off their daughter to Arul Pandi, a construction worker, despite her not having attained the legal age for marriage. Their wedding was scheduled for Thursday.
Meanwhile, an anonymous petition was received by the Tiruvarur Collector, who immediately ordered an inquiry headed by the Tiruvarur Tasildar. Based on the petition, the Tasildar reached the spot and, after inquiry, rescued the girl.
During inquiry, the Tasildar referred to documents from the school where the girl studied and found her actual age. Police sent off the parents after a stern warning. ENS
