HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam members stalled the proceedings of the Assembly for quite some time as soon as it met on the inaugural day of the winter session on Thursday morning. As a sitting member of the House— N Rajeswar Reddy (Mahaboobnagar) passed away recently, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy rose to introduce a condolence motion but the TD members were on their feet demanding that the speaker give an assurance that the no-confidence motion which they had moved would be taken up for discussion during the course of the session. But speaker Nadendla Manohar was not in a mood to entertain the demands of the the TD members saying that it was unfortunate that they were creating a scene on some issue forgetting that they have to move a condolence motion on the death of their own colleague.Expressing regret over the behaviour of TDP members, Manohar said the traditions of the House ought to be respected. As they continued with their protest, the Speaker adjourned the House for ten minutes. He then called the leaders of all political parties to his chambers and made them see reason in passing the condolence resolution first. What inflammed passions was the hard hitting criticism of TDP members’ behaviour by the chief minister. After reading out the resolution, the chief minister did not hide his displeasure over the way the TDP members created a ruckus in the House.“You should hang your heads in shame that you do not bother to mourn the death of your own colleague and instead interested in fighting over other issues,” he said.Reacting to this, the leader of the opposition N Chandrababu Naidu said, it was the responsibility of leader of the House and Speaker to safeguard the traditions of the House. He also said their protest was only to exert some pressure on the Speaker to accept the no-confidence motion.“We all know what happened during the last session, when we gave notice for moving a no-confidence motion. The speaker pleaded ignorance about it while the government ran away by getting the House adjourned indefinitely,” the TDP chief said, adding the TDP members were seeking an acknowledgment from the speaker on the no-confidence motion.Later, leaders of various parties paid homage to the departed MLA after which the House was adjourned for the day.
