New Delhi: Natwar Singh's son Jagat Singh's role in the Oil-for-Food scam was further exposed when the chief of the Indian Youth Congress in 2001, Randeep Surjewala, stated that Jagat did not go to Iraq as part of the Youth Congress.
Sujrewala had stated that Jagat had gone to Iraq in an individual capacity.
However, Jagat said that Sujrewala's statement was misleading. "He was right in saying there was no official Youth Cong delegation sent to Iraq in 2001, but I had gone there officially in my capacity as General Secretary of the Youth Congress and Surjewala knows this."
"In any case, the question here is not whether I went to Iraq as Congress General Secretary. The question here is whether Paul Volcker's allegations are true or not," he added.
Hinting at a conspiracy against his father, former External Affairs minister Natwar singh, Jagat said, "Rather than speculate about whether my name, or my father's name or the Congress party are mentioned in the Volcker report, I think we should all let Justice Pathak, Virendra Dayal and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) do their work."
"The logical question to ask here is why would the Saddam Hussein regime give us oil coupons? Anel Mathrani's malicious statements have just created undue confusion," he said.
Jagat Singh also claimed that he has never had any business links with Hamdan exports or with Andaleeb Seghal.
"Andaleeb Sehgal and I are just friends that's all. It's a shame all this has happened and that he won't even take my calls anymore, because if I call him, the ED calls him soon after to get a transcript of our conversation."
Jagat went on to say that the mere fact that they were never sent a notice means that Paul Volcker does not have any evidence or documents against the Congress, his father or him.
